SIDHI CHALLENGE CUP

Cricket in Sidhi has a history of nearly three decades. What began as a simple rural pastime has steadily grown into a structured and respected sporting tradition. Before modern cricket became popular in the district, a local game known as Gadhaa-Gend was commonly played in many villages. This traditional activity gradually laid the foundation for the development of cricket in the region.

Evolution of Cricket in Sidhi

A significant turning point came in 1996, when the Rewa-Sidhi Gramin Bank organized the All India Gramin Bank Cricket Tournament. Teams from various parts of the country took part in this event, giving Sidhi its first strong exposure to national-level competitive cricket.

In 1997, two sports enthusiasts, Gurudatt Bhatt, an officer of Rewa-Sidhi Gramin Bank, and Dr. Anup Mishra, a well-known physician and supporter of sports, jointly organized an All India Open Cricket Tournament in Sidhi. Their initiative played a major role in introducing structured, competitive cricket to the district.

Between 1998 and 2000, young players from Sidhi delivered impressive performances in various competitions. During this period, the district achieved remarkable success, becoming champion for three consecutive years in university-level cricket.

Gradually, as senior players retired, the cricket movement in Sidhi started losing its momentum. To revive the spirit of the game and provide new opportunities for emerging local talent, both Gurudatt Bhatt and Dr. Anup Mishra took the initiative to restart large-scale cricket tournaments in the district.

Their efforts received strong support from Dr. Rajesh Mishra, a respected physician and the current Member of Parliament, along with the Jyotsna Jan Kalyan Swasthya Samiti. Together, they ensured that the tournament was organized regularly and professionally. From the fifth season onward, the event has been conducted under the Sidhi Challenge Cup Tournament Samiti, a registered body dedicated to promoting cricket and maintaining high standards in the sport.

With eight seasons successfully completed, the cricket movement in Sidhi has regained its strength and popularity. The district is now preparing to host the ninth season in 2026, with the aim of taking the tournament to an even higher level. With the combined support of players, organizers, patrons, and the cricket-loving community, the event is expected to set new benchmarks in regional sports development.
